Sounds like brake pad resonance. Maybe the electric brake is stuck. Feel the wheels at the hubs after driving. If they are too warm at the back it could be dragging brake pads. Don't let it bother you in the meantime. New models can have problems like this and you have to wait a bit before the dealers and the manufacturer see the problem pattern and figure it out.

Thanks for the reassurance. Just annoying to have a brand new 40K car with weird noises. I also do notice the sound if the auto-hold is on. Specifically, sound occurs once the auto-hold disengages from a stop just before the car rolls forward. Think that?s consistent with a dragging pad? And with a pad issue, would you expect to have a problem only after driving at highway speeds but not around town?

I believe the Auto-Hold simply applies the parking brake, so there is a solenoid or actuator involved in that which would not necessarily be "silent."

Update:
Dealership has been in contact with Kia. They are requesting another look, planning to keep the car for 1-2 days to do some more diagnostics.

Let's hope they fix it this time and not tell you it's normal.

My scraping feel and pulsing vibration is diminishing. If it goes away i'll forget about it. It's no longer annoying and feels like it will be gone in a week. How'd it go away? I've been easy on the brakes because the vibration was annoying. Maybe that refaced the pads to ehe rotors? Who knows....

Glad to hear your brake issues are slowly resolving. Your sound was occurring while braking though, right. Not after coming to a complete stop and then letting off the brake pedal?

I just found this recall, which describes almost exactly what I?m experiencing. Obviously this is an old recall from a completely different car, but may still be helpful. I?ll have the dealership take a look at it. Since I don?t notice the problem unless I?ve done highway driving, I?m afraid they won?t be able to replicate the problem unless I actually request taking them for another drive. Does that seem excessive or unnecessary?

This is a distinct possibility. I haven't looked closely at the rear brakes on my GT2 but most cars like this use a small drum brake for a parking brake, not the disc brake pads/rotor. Good find.

My issue is under speed and with a soft brake pedal application. It's going away but I don't think it will 'go away'. So I'll deal with it until my next oil change and get both the oil change and the rotor change done at the same time. No frsutration here. It's the first year of a new model.

UPdate:
Dealership used the chassis-ears and after replicating the sound, they localized it to the exhaust. So now they are going to wait to hear back from Kia about what fix, if any is recommended.

I still find the explanation puzzling, though as the sound is drawn out with slow release of the brake pedal. I asked about the brake calipers and they said everything looked good. Kia tech people say it?s caused by increased back pressure that occurs after highway driving that is then released when brake is released. I?m definitely not knowledgeable enough to say if this is a plausible explanation or not.

I took a sporting drive yesterday on the 427 (12 lane hwy with divided collectors and express lanes) and really squirted between traffic, without looking reckless pushed to 170k (105 mph) in short bursts. Had to clamp on the brakes really hard a couple of times and clamped hard on them just for evaluation. Still not perfect but close. So although I have a set of rotors to replace them at the dealer, I may not. Seems the pads are rebedding with the rotors. I'll update as I experience more.

Update:
Dealership replaced the center muffler. Initially I thought there was some improvement but sound is still there just like before. I?ll be updating Kia customer service later.

Hey. Sorry for not getting back to you guys. I did replace my tires with the Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3+ and feel like the road noise is definitely better though still suboptimal. Handling , however, is much improved. With the stock tires, I didn?t feel confident cornering with any gusto but the Michelins allow for more spirited driving.

My initial vibrations that were related to brake release did gradually resolve after the center muffler was replaced. For now I?m content.
