How do you remove the radio knob?

The volume knob is cracked. I have the replacement and it looks like it's held in with a retaining ring that I assume should just release if pulled hard enough, but it doesn't seem to want to come off. So I'm looking for confirmation, does it just pull straight off with enough force or is there something else holding it on?
