Hey stinger1919! The vent that you're referring to actually bends outward as the air flows through it. The design is such that any debris traveling through that channel will be directed away from the side of the Stinger.

Another easy trick to help stop the oil from splashing on you? Leave the oil cap ON when you drain the crankcase! That will slow the flow and keep it clean.
