Remote Start!

This is sort of a repost from the "What would you change" thread.. I thought this was important enough to post an individual thread about it, so here it is:

Just got the car back.. Nobody at Kia could really tell me much about the remote start, except that they thought it was a separate fob, which was very disappointing (the fact that there was a second fob for remote start). I took a pic of the second fob next to the smart key.

The great news is that remote start can be activated through the smart key by pressing lock and then the trunk or panic button (see attached quick start guide).

All in all, it works as designed. I started the car from about 150 feet away with the extra fob, and then the smart key. I'm sure the range is the same using the smart key as any other function (lock, unlock etc.). I haven't tested max distance, and I'm probably not going to as I feel like it would vary with battery power. No idea if the additional starter fob has more or less range than the smart key.

The only bummer is that there is no "take-over" feature, meaning that when I open the door, the car shuts off and I have to start it again. Most vehicles I've ever had required me to re-push the start button anyway, so it's really no big deal.. I just think it's dumb that I have to re-start the car. Hopefully with the auto-stop/start feature, this car has a robust starter that won't get worn out by the extra starts over a few years.

The cost of parts and labor were around $575.00.. That may vary from dealer to dealer.

So there it is.. Maybe the first remote start. I'm happy, and tomorrow morning I'll be extra happy to get into a warm vehicle!

Long term wise, I actually prefer this over the UVO app since there's no subscription fee.

The service manager mentioned that the UVO app may eventually become available (similar to what they have for the K900), but he had no idea when.

Great review, might be something for Canadians to consider as well if they want to ditch the UVO app.

That is correct. There will be a switch to the embedded UVO in the future but current head units will not upgrade. I'm guessing 2020.

Yep.. based on my desire for remote start, and the fact that it can be done with the smart key, I would check that box if I were building the car.. Especially since it costs less to include in the build than to install after delivery.

Since you have to turn the vehicle on again after starting it, I won't be getting it. I'll do an aftermarket fob. That's definitely a bummer from a convenience standpoint. It's either buy an aftermarket one or not get one at all. UVO would be good if it's free. The BlueLink system Hyundai uses needs a subscription which is $100 annually. Uhh no...

It's your money, but I look at the steps to driving away in the car as the same. In my Camaro, if I use remote start, I still have to press the start button with the brake petal depressed in order to put the car in gear and drive away. Same with all other vehicles I have had remote start for.

In this case, I have to get in the car, depress the brake and press the start button. The only difference is that the engine is actually starting (again).

With an aftermarket fob, you are forced to keep up with the additional fob. With the KIA system, you can use the smart key and leave the additional fob at home. Pocket space and convenience are a premium for me, so I would rather go with the OEM system.

On top of that, when I was pricing this out, I checked with Best Buy to see if they even had an aftermarket system for this vehicle. They don't. If you choose aftermarket, you may be in for a wait.

Just my two cents. I agree that it's dumb that the car shuts off when I open the door. It makes zero sense. I'll bet that's corrected on the 2019 model.

I'm no expert but doesn't this have something to do with preventing theft. As in not allowing someone to be able to get into the car and drive off.

I suppose it's the Kia version, but again, in order to put my Camaro in gear, I have to have the smart key on me and press the start button upon entering the car. Without doing that, the shift lever won't move. On the civic I traded in, if I attempted to shift into gear before pressing start under the same conditions, the car would die.

Either way, we have to do the same thing with this car... Get in and press the start button. My real beef with this is unnecessary wear and tear on a starter that already works overtime with the auto start/stop feature that I always forget to turn off. Hope the Stinger's is heavy duty.

Definitely something to consider... Probably find out in the next few months how robust it is. I am going to monitor repair/reliability reports as much as I can.

Not bashing you at all, just putting my opinion out there. If all we had to do was, like the million other cars out there with remote start, hold the brake and push the start button, it would be excellent. I know of cheaper cars, I mean way cheaper, that have the functionality on the factory key fob (Cruze). Integrating it into the factory fob is the best and most convenient way to go. The way your Camaro uses the function is how it should be, reducing the stress on the starter.

The engine shut off after you unlock the door isn't unique to Kia, my Mercedes does the exact same thing. MB claims its an anti theft feature.

How is it anti-theft if the car has to be locked for remote start to initiate and for the button along with the brake pedal to be depressed? I understand the concept, however, I don't get why it's classified that way if there are already three safety nets

I can attest VW does the same thing too, it seems to be the standard with manufacturers.
